The Battle Belongs to the Lord (Part 1)

“Everybody here will see that the Lord doesn’t need swords or spears to save his people. The Lord always wins his battles, and he will help us defeat you.”
– 1 Samuel 17:47

rocksDo you ever feel like winning a battle against the culture trying to steal away your kids is a hopeless fight that will doubtless leave you defeated? The context of the verse above is the story of David and Goliath. Are you scanning the battlefield (IE: the news, mainstream media, your children’s peers, etc.) and seeing that big Goliath (IE: the messages coming at our kids: it’s ok to have sex before you’re married, the most important thing is to be popular, if it feels right, it is right, etc.) and your stomach is turning as you cower behind the front lines?

Let me play the role of David here for a minute and encourage you. Parents – this is the Lord’s battle. Whatever you are facing with your kids – whether it’s the friend down the street who doesn’t hold the same media standards as your family does or the disheartening discovery of pornography on your teen’s laptop – God is with you and is on your side. No intimidating giant is bigger than our God.

One thing that strikes me when I read this passage in 1 Samuel (and think of it in light of the cultural battle we are currently immersed in) is that David didn’t come up to the front lines and try to encourage people by saying “You know, Goliath isn’t that big. I think we can take him.” No, David had an accurate and realistic view of Goliath. He understood why everyone was so afraid of him. And if the Philistine’s army was anything like Goliath, they had good reason to panic. It’s a lot like that with the way our culture is going right now. I can think of a number current events and political debates that could pretty similarly represent Goliath. And I’m not going to try to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes – it’s scary folks. There are a lot of things in the works right now that could potentially derail our nation and the faith of our children.

But here is where we cannot depend on the traditional weapons of warfare. We need to stand like David did – accurately size up the situation and then rely on the Lord to fight this battle. We need to recognize the enemy and our own weaknesses and then beseech the Lord to fight for us. Then we need to get out on that battle field and stand in the confidence and assurance of God’s Spirit. And we need to show the enemy (and our kids) that we are not afraid of him. He may be big and scary and have an agenda to destroy us and our children, but we have the God of the universe backing us up.

So let me put on my David hat again and say this: The battle is not our own, parents, but it belongs to the Lord. I am praying for you and the battles you are facing on behalf of your kids. Let’s join together in praying for this generation and specifically praying that God would fight the battle for their hearts, minds, and bodies. And as He is faithful and answers that prayer, let’s be the warriors God uses to stand in the gap for our kids and go to battle for them.
